Building the Future of Healthcare and Substance Use Prevention in Northeastern Wisconsin

At NEWAHEC, we’re on a mission to bridge the gap between the growing demand for healthcare services and the next generation of healthcare professionals. Additionally, we’re dedicated to combating substance use disorders and promoting healthier communities. With your support, we can bridge healthcare gaps, nurture a strong workforce, and combat substance use challenges in our region.

Our Mission

Our mission is to enhance access to quality primary health care for underserved populations in northeast Wisconsin. We achieve our mission by connecting students to careers, professionals to communities, and communities to better health through partnerships with academic and community organizations.

Our Vision

Everyone would have access to the health services and resources they need.

Our History

NEWAHEC traces its roots back to the establishment of Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) in response to the shortage of primary care physicians and inequitable distribution of healthcare professionals. Since 1971, the AHEC program has focused on recruiting, training, and retaining a healthcare workforce committed to serving underserved populations.

Our Present

Today, NEWAHEC serves as one of seven health education centers in Wisconsin, covering a wide geographical area including Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Winnebago, and Washington Counties. With a focus on increasing diversity, distribution, and development of the healthcare workforce, we offer a diverse range of education and training opportunities.

Our Funding

NEWAHEC receives support from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. We also serve as a fiscal agent for various state and federal prevention grants and receive funding from Advancing Healthier Wisconsin.
