Description of Opportunity and Instructions How to Apply
Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center, Inc. (NEWAHEC) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving an 11-county region in northeastern Wisconsin (Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, and Winnebago Counties). NEWAHEC is one of seven AHEC centers that comprise the Wisconsin AHEC System. Through statewide initiatives, partnerships, and collaborations, the centers serve their respective regions and the state, promoting cooperative solutions to local health problems. AHEC programs focus on education:
- Enrichment programs for high school students interested in health careers,
- Community-based training opportunities for health professions students,
- Professional development programs for providers, and
- Health promotion programming for consumers.
NEWAHEC also manages four grants related to substance abuse prevention. Three of these grants are administered through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services; one is a direct federal grant from the Health Resources Services Administration/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (HRSA/SAMHSA). The Prevention Coordinator position is funded through the HRSA/SAMHSA Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support program. This funding opportunity provides community substance abuse prevention coalitions with up to ten years of funding. NEWAHEC is the fiscal agent for the DFC grant for the Manitowoc County Substance Abuse Prevention coalition. Please note that this grant is nearing the end of its eighth year of funding (out of ten total). The grant will conclude September 29, 2019.
The Prevention Coordinator is the primary staff person associated with the DFC grant. This person is responsible for day-to-day management of DFC grant activities. In addition to this position, there are three other full-time staff at NEWAHEC who work in the field of substance abuse prevention. The Prevention Coordinator will work in partnership with these staff.
The NEWAHEC office is located in Manitowoc. Nearly all activities associated with this position occur in Manitowoc County. One exception is that the Prevention Coordinator assists the NEWAHEC Tobacco Control Coordinator with tobacco compliance checks in a four-county region: Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan.
